About

Ember is an energy think tank registered in England and Wales that compiles electricity statistics from sources such as EIA, Eurostat, the Energy Institute, and national statistics offices. Its Data API at api.ember-energy.org/v1 serves yearly data for over 200 geographies and monthly data for 88 geographies, which Ember says represent more than 90% of global power demand. Series cover generation by fuel in TWh, demand, power sector emissions in MtCO2e, emissions intensity in gCO2e per kWh, and monthly wind and solar capacity in GW for 25 countries. Both datasets are updated twice a month, in the first and third week, and back periods are amended as newer figures arrive.

An operator reads the intensity for the countries where your sites run and proposes the emissions factor line in your reporting pack, sourced to the series and month it came from.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from Ember Data API and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

  • Electricity demand from /electricity-demand/yearly and /electricity-demand/monthly
  • Power sector emissions in MtCO2e from /power-sector-emissions/yearly and /power-sector-emissions/monthly
  • Grid carbon intensity in gCO2e per kWh from /carbon-intensity/yearly and /carbon-intensity/monthly
  • Installed wind and solar capacity in GW from /installed-capacity/monthly
  • Valid entity, series, and date values for any dataset from /options/{dataset}/{temporal_resolution}/{filter_name}, which also shows whether a new period has landed

Requirements

  • A free Ember API key, requested with an email address that Ember confirms by email
  • Country names or 3-letter ISO codes for entity or entity_code; regions are named entities and take no code
  • Attribution to Ember as the data source wherever the figures are shown, as the CC-BY-4.0 licence requires
Authentication
A free Ember API key requested at ember-energy.org/data/api and confirmed by email, passed as the api_key query parameter.

Limits

  • Ember states there is no rate limit at present; a wrong key returns 403 and a wrong URL returns 404
  • Resolution is yearly or monthly by country or region; there is no hourly series and no site-level data
  • Back periods are revised twice a month, so a figure already reported can change on the next update
  • Reference listing: Fibric adds the Ember pull to a managed deployment on request, keyed to the countries and regions you name

Questions and answers

How often does Ember update the API data?
Twice a month. Ember states that both the yearly and monthly datasets get an update in the first week of the month and a second in the third week. Query /options with the date or year filter name to see the latest available period before pulling data.
Does the CC-BY-4.0 licence allow commercial use of Ember data?
Yes. Ember publishes the data under CC-BY-4.0 and states anyone may use it for any purpose, personal or commercial. Ember must be cited as the source, and no additional legal or technological restrictions may be added to the data.
What do the aggregate series contain?
Aggregates such as Clean, Fossil, Renewables, and Total generation are flagged by is_aggregate_series. Other Renewables covers geothermal, tidal, and wave generation. Other Fossil covers oil and petroleum products, manufactured gases, and waste. Set is_aggregate_series=false to get individual fuels.
