About

DWD Open Data is the free file server of the Deutscher Wetterdienst, Germany's national meteorological service, at opendata.dwd.de. The weather tree carries ICON model output in GRIB2, MOSMIX point forecasts in KML, CAP warnings, radar composites, and station reports. The climate_environment tree holds the Climate Data Center archive. No registration is needed and no availability level is promised.

On Fibric, an operator reads the files that matter to your German sites, such as the MOSMIX forecast for the nearest station or the CAP warning for your district, and proposes the next step for your approval.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from DWD Open Data and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

  • ICON, ICON-EU, and ICON-D2 forecast fields in GRIB2 under weather/nwp, with ensembles in icon-eps, icon-eu-eps, and icon-d2-eps
  • MOSMIX_S and MOSMIX_L station forecasts in KML under weather/local_forecasts/mos, to 240 hours ahead
  • Warnings in CAP format under weather/alerts/cap, in DISTRICT and COMMUNEUNION variants
  • Radar composites, RADOLAN, and RADVOR precipitation products under weather/radar
  • Station reports under weather/weather_reports, including poi, synoptic, and road_weather_stations
  • Climate Data Center archives under climate_environment/CDC, and WMS and WFS layers from the DWD GeoWebService

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Hold German deliveries under a CAP warning

    Read the DISTRICT warning files for the districts you deliver to. When a warning appears, the operator proposes holding the affected orders and drafts a customer notice, and you decide.

    With Weather Hold

  • Pre-heat before a cold night

    Use the MOSMIX_S hourly forecast for the station nearest each site. When the minimum temperature falls under your threshold, the operator proposes freeze protection and records the forecast file it used.

    With Freeze Protection

  • Brief site leads on tomorrow's weather

    Pull the MOSMIX_L forecast and any open warnings for each site into the morning summary, with the issue time of each file, so leads see the same source.

Requirements

  • The MOSMIX station id or the district name for each German site you watch
  • A GRIB2 reader, such as ecCodes, if you use ICON model fields rather than MOSMIX point forecasts
  • Source acknowledgement of the Deutscher Wetterdienst under CC BY 4.0 where the data appears
Authentication
None. The server grants access without registration; files are fetched over HTTPS from directory listings.

Limits

  • DWD states that service and availability levels cannot be guaranteed for the open data server
  • Files are replaced as new runs arrive; MOSMIX_L refreshes four times a day at 04, 10, 16, and 22 UTC
  • ICON global runs at 00, 06, 12, and 18 UTC; only the 00 and 12 UTC runs reach 180 hours
  • Model fields arrive as GRIB2 packages per parameter and run, not as point forecasts

Questions and answers

Is registration needed?
No. DWD grants access without registration. The server stores your IP address for at most 7 days to run and secure the service, and shares it with no third party. DWD gives no availability guarantee for the server.
Which product gives a forecast for one place?
MOSMIX. It is a statistically optimised point forecast for about 5,400 locations worldwide. MOSMIX_S updates 24 times a day with 40 parameters; MOSMIX_L updates four times a day with 115 parameters. Both reach 240 hours. Files are KML under weather/local_forecasts/mos.
What licence applies?
DWD open spatial data and services defined as high-value datasets may be re-used under Creative Commons CC BY 4.0, provided the source is acknowledged. DWD publishes rules and templates for the acknowledgement.
