About

The KNMI Data Platform is the open data service of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute. Datasets are files reached through the Open Data API, with an MQTT Notification Service that announces each new file, an EDR API for station and gridded time series, and WMS layers. Content spans 10-minute station observations, HARMONIE-AROME Cy43 forecasts, 5-minute radar composites, precipitation nowcasts, and Dutch weather warnings.

An operator on Fibric subscribes to the datasets your Dutch sites depend on and proposes a hold, a notice, or a schedule change when a new file crosses your threshold. You approve it and keep the receipt.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from KNMI Data Platform and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

What you can build

  • Hold Dutch deliveries under a weather warning

    Subscribe to the Dutch weather warnings dataset. When a new warning file lands, the operator proposes holding orders for the affected regions and a customer notice, and asks for your approval.

  • Time a yard operation between showers

    Read the 5-minute precipitation nowcast for the site. The operator proposes moving outdoor dock work into the dry window and records the nowcast file it used.

  • Protect pipes on a freezing night

    Use HARMONIE-AROME temperature fields or the nearest 10-minute station. When the forecast falls below your threshold, the operator proposes freeze protection and shows the value it read.

Requirements

  • A developer account and a key requested per API in the API Catalog, unless you use the shared anonymous key
  • The dataset name and version for each feed you subscribe to
  • An MQTT 5.0 client with a unique client id if you use the Notification Service
  • Attribution to KNMI under CC BY 4.0 for datasets that carry that licence
Authentication
An API key from the KNMI developer portal, sent in the Authorization header; a shared anonymous key is published, and a registered account gets its own.

Limits

  • The anonymous key is shared: 50 requests per minute and 3,000 per hour across all users, and it is replaced each year
  • A registered Open Data API key allows 200 requests per second within a quota of 1,000 requests per hour
  • Notification messages are kept for at most 24 hours for clients that reconnect
  • Keys may not be embedded in public websites or apps; rate limiting answers with HTTP 429

Questions and answers

Do you need to register?
Not to start. An anonymous Open Data API key is published on the developer portal with shared limits and a one-year validity. A registered account gets a personal key that does not expire, with 200 requests per second and 1,000 per hour.
How do you learn about new files?
Through the Notification Service: MQTT over WebSockets on mqtt.dataplatform.knmi.nl, port 443. Subscribe to dataplatform/file/v1/{dataset}/{version}/created with your API key as the password. The fair use policy rules out excessive polling of the files endpoint.
Which licence applies?
Most datasets carry Creative Commons Attribution 4.0; the Possibly dangerous weather CAP feed is CC0 1.0, and some commissioned sets are closed. Each dataset page states its licence. KNMI publishes under the Dutch Wet Open Overheid.
