MeteoSwiss Open Government Data

Swiss station measurements, climate, radar and ICON forecast files from MeteoSwiss, catalogued on data.geo.admin.ch under CC BY 4.0.

About

MeteoSwiss is the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology of Switzerland. Its open government data programme publishes five dataset groups: ground-based measurements, atmosphere measurements, climate data, radar data and forecast data. Files are catalogued through the OGC STAC API on data.geo.admin.ch, the Federal Spatial Data Infrastructure, and downloaded as CSV for station series and GRIB2 for the ICON-CH1/2-EPS forecast model.

Through Fibric, an operator lists a collection, fetches the now, recent or historical file for a station or model run, and proposes a setpoint, a start time or a frost action against your buildings and equipment, for a person to approve.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from MeteoSwiss Open Government Data and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Automatic weather stations (collection ch.meteoschweiz.ogd-smn): temperature, precipitation, wind, sunshine, humidity, radiation and pressure every 10 minutes
  • Station files at 10-minute (t), hourly (h), daily (d), monthly (m) and yearly (y) granularity, split into now, recent and historical
  • Metadata CSVs per collection: ogd-smn_meta_parameters.csv, ogd-smn_meta_stations.csv and ogd-smn_meta_datainventory.csv
  • Numerical weather forecasting model ICON-CH1/2-EPS and KENDA-CH1 assets as GRIB2 under forecast data
  • Radar data and climate data collections, with radio soundings and convection radar products on the roadmap for 2026
  • The collection catalogue at https://data.geo.admin.ch/api/stac/v1/collections, with asset ETags for conditional requests

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Start heating earlier on a cold ICON forecast

Read the ICON-CH1/2-EPS temperature for a site's grid cell and propose an earlier plant start on mornings that will run cold.

    With Optimal Start

  • Check a PV array against measured radiation

Compare inverter output with global radiation from the nearest automatic station and propose an inspection when yield lags the sky.

    With Array Yield

  • Frost watch from the 10-minute station file

Watch the now file for a nearby station and propose freeze protection when air temperature approaches zero.

    With Freeze Protection

  • Guest comfort from conditions outside

Feed station humidity and temperature to the comfort operator so room setpoint proposals follow the weather at the door.

    With Guest Comfort

Requirements

  • A STAC client or plain HTTP fetcher pointed at the data.geo.admin.ch collections
  • CSV parsing for semicolon separators, full-stop decimals and Windows-1252 encoding
  • A GRIB2 reader if you use the ICON-CH1/2-EPS forecast files
  • Attribution reading Source: MeteoSwiss on anything you republish
Authentication
None. Files download from data.geo.admin.ch without a key; you acknowledge the terms of use before access.

Limits

  • No query API yet; three beta APIs (climate EDR, local forecast OGC Features, ICON EDR) are in development until the end of 2026
  • Assets are cached for 2 hours, or 10 seconds for 10-minute collections; the terms bar high-frequency re-download of the same content
  • Timestamps mark the end of the interval for 10-minute and hourly values but the start for daily and coarser
  • Warnings may only be redistributed promptly and unaltered

Access and pricing

Questions and answers

How often are the files refreshed?
Historical files are rebuilt once a year. Recent files are rebuilt in a process that starts at 10 UTC and 1 UTC and lasts around 60 minutes. Now files refresh every 10 minutes, with 10-minute station files on a 20-minute interval.
What license covers the data?
Creative Commons CC BY 4.0. You may share and process the data for any purpose, including commercially, if you cite the source as Source: MeteoSwiss and do not make it appear that MeteoSwiss supports your use.
Is there an API for queries?
Not yet. The documentation says API access will not be available before the end of 2026. Three beta APIs are being developed: a MeteoGate climate data EDR API, an OGC Feature API for local forecasts on the FSDI, and a MeteoSwiss OGC EDR API for ICON-CH1/2-EPS.
