Natural Earth

Public domain cultural, administrative, physical, and raster cartographic layers at multiple scales from Natural Earth.

About

Natural Earth is a public domain cartographic dataset built through a collaboration of volunteer cartographers and the North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS). It features tightly integrated cultural and physical vector layers alongside raster shaded relief and land cover imagery, engineered across three standardized cartographic scales: 1:10,000,000, 1:50,000,000, and 1:110,000,000.

Through Fibric, an operator references Natural Earth boundary polygons and geographic basemaps, proposing regional territory visualizations or country-level operational division tags for business reporting.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from Natural Earth and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Country boundary polygons, sovereignty alignments, and disputed border lines at 1:10m scale
  • First-order internal administrative boundaries for states, provinces, and territories worldwide
  • Populated place point locations with population rank classifications and metropolitan indicators
  • Physical geographic features including coastlines, major river systems, lakes, and mountain ranges
  • Downloadable ESRI shapefiles, SQLite GeoPackages, and georeferenced raster relief tiles

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Standardize multi-country regional operating boundaries

Map corporate country territories against Natural Earth 1:10m administrative boundaries, proposing standardized regional boundary groupings for executive dashboards.

    With Territory Balance, Board Pack

  • Assign country codes and sovereign jurisdictions

Cross-reference international delivery destination coordinates with Natural Earth country polygons, proposing ISO country code tags for export documentation.

    With Customs Declaration

  • Benchmark regional market presence against populated places

Compare physical retail and warehouse footprints against Natural Earth populated place ranks, proposing expansion targets in major secondary population centers.

    With Site Benchmark

Requirements

  • GIS or spatial database software capable of reading Shapefile or GeoPackage formats
  • Selection of appropriate cartographic scale (1:10m, 1:50m, or 1:110m) matching display zoom levels
  • Coordinate projection handling conforming to the WGS 84 (EPSG:4326) spatial reference system
Authentication
None. Natural Earth datasets are distributed as direct public HTTPS downloads from naturalearthdata.com requiring no authentication or API keys.

Limits

  • Natural Earth is designed for small-to-medium scale cartography and is not suited for street-level routing
  • Datasets are distributed as pre-built archive files rather than an interactive REST query API
  • Boundary updates occur periodically reflecting major geopolitical and administrative adjustments
