SMARD

German electricity market data from the Bundesnetzagentur: generation, consumption, day-ahead prices, flows, and balancing, as files.

About

SMARD, short for StromMARktDaten, is the electricity market data platform of the Bundesnetzagentur, run under section 111d of the German Energy Industry Act. It collects the transparency data that German transmission system operators and power exchanges report to the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform, checks it, and republishes it for Germany, Austria, and Luxembourg in quarter-hourly to yearly resolution. Downloads carry a CC BY 4.0 licence with the credit "Bundesnetzagentur | SMARD.de".

An operator on Fibric fetches the day-ahead price and forecasted consumption files for the DE/LU bidding zone each day and proposes moving deferrable runs into the cheaper hours. You approve; the file and rows used are kept with the change.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from SMARD and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Electricity generation: Actual generation by energy source, Forecasted generation, and Installed generation capacity
  • Electricity consumption: Actual consumption and Forecasted consumption, with forecasted residual load in the market data visuals
  • Market: Day-ahead prices, Scheduled commercial exchanges, and Cross-border physical flows
  • Balancing: Frequency Containment Reserve, Automatic and Manual Frequency Restoration Reserve, Balancing energy, imported and exported balancing services, and Total costs
  • Power plant data: actual generation per unit for plants with at least 100 MW installed capacity
  • Regions: bidding zones DE/LU and DE/AT/LU (to 30 September 2018), Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, and control areas 50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT, TransnetBW, APG, and Creos
  • Files in CSV, XLS, or XML from the Data download section, in the original resolution, for a period of up to two years

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Run deferrable production in the cheap hours

Download the day-ahead prices for DE/LU once they publish, rank the hours, and propose which runs move. You approve; the price file is attached to the receipt.

    With Price Shift, Tariff Window

  • Set tomorrow's battery blocks from German prices

Pair the day-ahead curve with the site load forecast and the battery's state of charge, and propose the charge and discharge schedule for review.

    With Battery Dispatch

  • Pre-cool ahead of a forecasted consumption peak

Read the forecasted consumption and forecasted residual load for Germany and propose staged loads or pre-cooling inside equipment and comfort limits.

    With Peak Demand

Requirements

  • A main category, data category, region, date range, and file type for each download
  • Parsing of period-start timestamps in German local time, including the skipped and repeated hour at daylight-saving changes
  • A re-fetch routine, because SMARD revises published series when the TSOs update the ENTSO-E data
  • The credit "Bundesnetzagentur | SMARD.de" wherever the data is republished
Authentication
None. Files are downloaded from the Data download pages without an account or key.

Limits

  • SMARD documents file downloads, not a query API; each download covers at most two years
  • Series are corrected on the basis of new findings with no set revision process, so historic values can change
  • Some data categories exist only for certain regions; the portal answers "No data is available for the selected region" otherwise
  • Chart visuals that cannot be downloaded for longer periods sit outside the CC BY 4.0 licence

Access and pricing

Questions and answers

Where does SMARD's data come from?
Mostly from the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform, where German transmission system operators and power exchanges must publish data under Commission Regulation (EU) No 543/2013. SMARD collects it automatically, checks it, and republishes it. Power plant details come from the Bundesnetzagentur's list of power plants.
How soon after real time does data appear?
The user guide says the platform shows data in nearly real time. The regulation requires most series, such as actual generation and physical flows, to be published no later than one hour after the operating period. The start-page summary box posts each hour's values three hours later.
What formats and regions can you download?
CSV, XLS, or XML, for a period of up to two years, in the original resolution. Regions are the DE/LU and DE/AT/LU bidding zones, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, and the control areas 50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT, TransnetBW, APG, and Creos.
