About

The SPP Marketplace Portal at portal.spp.org is the public file browser of Southwest Power Pool, Inc. It covers two balancing authority areas, SPP East and SWPW West. Its Public pages hold CSV files from the Day-Ahead Market, the Real-Time Balancing Market, and Operations: locational marginal prices by settlement location and by bus, market clearing prices, operating reserve clearing by reserve zone, hourly load by balancing area, generation mix by fuel, and mid-term and short-term load forecasts against actuals. Each page is a folder tree by year with a latest-interval file at the top.

On Fibric, an operator reads the latest interval file for your settlement location, compares it with your site's load, and proposes a shift, a hold, or a battery dispatch for your approval.

    Read RTBM-LMP-SL-latestInterval.csv for your settlement location. When the LMP or its congestion component passes your threshold, the operator proposes shifting or holding flexible load and records the interval it used.

    Pull OP-MTLF files each hour and compare the forecast for your balancing authority area with your own demand plan. The operator proposes pre-cooling or a peak hold and shows the forecast row behind it.

  • Dispatch a battery on reserves and prices

    Combine RTBM-OR reserve clearing for your Reserve Zone with the interval LMP. The operator proposes a charge or discharge window for your approval and leaves a receipt with both files named.

Requirements

  • The settlement location or Pnode names and the balancing authority area, SPP or SWPW, for each site you watch
  • A citation of Southwest Power Pool wherever the data is reproduced, as the Terms of Use ask
  • Express written authorization from SPP before any commercial use of Portal information, as the Terms of Use require
Authentication
None for Public pages. Files are listed and downloaded over HTTPS from the portal's file browser without an account; the secured Marketplace Portal areas behind Sign In are not used.

Limits

  • Files, not an API: each page is a folder tree by year with a latestInterval file, and you poll the listing for new intervals
  • SPP disclaims any warranty as to the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, or availability of Portal information
  • Commercial use of Portal information requires express written authorization from SPP
  • Generation Mix Self values report the Dispatch MW target at the end of the interval, not metered output

Questions and answers

Do you need an SPP account to download the files?
No. The Public pages list and serve CSV files without sign-in. Sign In on the portal is for secured Marketplace Portal areas, which SPP's job aid describes as needing a digital certificate, a login ID, and a password.
How often do the price files update?
The Real-Time Balancing Market LMP By Location page lists annual, monthly, daily, and 5-minute interval files, plus RTBM-LMP-SL-latestInterval.csv. Operating Reserves files arrive every 5 minutes. MTLF vs. Actual files arrive every hour. Hourly Load files are daily and monthly.
Can the data be used commercially?
The Terms of Use permit copying and distribution with appropriate citation, except within a commercial publication. Commercial use of Portal information requires express written authorization from SPP. Ask SPP at questions@spp.org before reselling or publishing it.
