About

Transport for NSW runs the Open Data Hub at opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au and the API gateway at api.transport.nsw.gov.au. The catalogue holds GTFS-realtime vehicle positions and trip updates, the Timetables Complete GTFS zip for every operator, the Trip Planner APIs, and road datasets such as Live Traffic Hazards. An account gives you an API token; the default Bronze plan allows 60,000 calls a day at 5 a second. Unless a dataset says otherwise, everything is Creative Commons Attribution 4.0.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from Transport for NSW Open Data Hub and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

  • Public Transport - Realtime Vehicle Positions v2 for Sydney Trains, Metro, and Inner West Light Rail, as GTFS-realtime with TfNSW extensions
  • Public Transport - Realtime Trip Update v2: stop time updates for active trips, replacement vehicles, and changed stopping patterns
  • Timetables Complete GTFS: static timetables, stop locations, and route shapes for all operators, including routes not in the realtime feeds
  • Trip Planner APIs: Stop Finder, Trip Planner, Departure, Service Alerts, and Coordinate Request
  • Live Traffic Hazards: incidents, fires, floods, alpine conditions, major events, and roadworks as GeoJSON with coordinates
  • Dataset status and API status pages, plus a last-updated stamp on every dataset

What you can build

  • Resequence a delivery run around a live road closure

    Live Traffic Hazards returns incidents, floods, and roadworks as GeoJSON. When one lands on a planned route, the operator proposes a new stop order for the driver and keeps the hazard record with the change.

  • Tell the customer why the van is late

    A hazard on the driver's road at that hour explains a slipping ETA. The operator drafts the customer message with the hazard named, for your approval, and logs what was sent.

  • Cover the counter when Sydney Trains stop

    Trip Update v2 shows changed stopping patterns and replacement vehicles on the lines your staff ride. Shift Coverage proposes who covers the first hour and attaches the update.

Requirements

  • An Open Data Hub account and an API token stored where it is not exposed in URLs or markup
  • The TfNSW GTFS-realtime extension proto file to decode the extended fields
  • Attribution to Transport for NSW when you redistribute or reuse the data
  • A download step outside the API explorer for the Timetables Complete GTFS zip, which is too large for it
Authentication
A free API token created under API Tokens in your Open Data Hub profile and sent as the header Authorization: apikey <token>; the token is shown once.

Limits

  • Bronze plan: 60,000 calls a day and 5 a second; a 403 means the quota or rate is exceeded, and higher limits are by request
  • The v2 realtime feeds named here cover Sydney Trains, Metro, and Inner West Light Rail
  • The Opal fare component of the Trip Planner APIs was discontinued on 16 October 2023
  • API resources and downloads sit behind a login; the hub publishes last-updated stamps rather than fixed refresh intervals

Questions and answers

How many calls does a free key allow?
The default Bronze plan gives 60,000 calls a day and 5 a second. Missing or invalid keys return 401; an exceeded quota or rate returns 403. Transport for NSW says to contact OpenDataHelp@transport.nsw.gov.au if the limits are too restrictive for your application.
What licence applies?
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, unless a dataset states otherwise. You may redistribute and reuse the data on condition that Transport for NSW is attributed as the source. The hub's Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Acceptable Use Policy also apply.
Which realtime feeds cover which modes?
Realtime Vehicle Positions v2 and Realtime Trip Update v2 cover Metro, Sydney Trains, and Inner West Light Rail in GTFS-realtime with TfNSW extensions. Timetables Complete GTFS is the static file for all operators, including regional, trackwork, and routes that have no realtime feed.
