ARPANSA Real-time UV Index

Measured UV index from ARPANSA's monitoring sites across Australia and Antarctica, published as an XML feed through the day.

About

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency runs a network of ultraviolet detectors in cities around Australia and at Antarctic stations. The detectors respond to UV in a manner similar to human skin, collect data continuously, and the public chart updates every minute. The same readings are published as one XML file, uvvalues.xml, on uvdata.arpansa.gov.au.

Each location element carries a three-letter site name, the current index, local time and date, a UTC datetime, and a status that reads ok or offline. Sites in the feed include Adelaide, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Emerald, Gold Coast, Kingston, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney, and Townsville, with Casey, Davis, Mawson, and Macquarie Island.

An operator reads the current index at the site nearest each workplace and proposes a break schedule or a guest notice for your approval.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from ARPANSA Real-time UV Index and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Current measured UV index per site from the index element in uvvalues.xml
  • Site identity: the location id (city name) and a three-letter name code such as adl, bri, or can
  • Reading time as local time and date, fulldate, and utcdatetime
  • A status element per site, ok or offline, so a stale site is visible
  • Australian city sites and the Antarctic stations Casey, Davis, Mawson, and Macquarie Island in one file

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Call the break on a measured index, not a forecast

Schedule Notice reads the current index at the site nearest an outdoor crew and drafts a shade-break notice when it crosses the level your policy sets. Severe Weather Notice carries the same reading to site leads. Nothing reaches the crew until a supervisor approves.

With Schedule Notice, Severe Weather Notice

  • Pool and beach guest notices

Guest Requests reads the current index for the resort's city and proposes a lobby and app notice when the reading is high, with sunscreen and shade prompts. The duty manager approves the wording.

    With Guest Requests

  • Morning brief by site

Morning Brief lists each site's reading and status at the start of the day, and flags any station reporting offline so nobody relies on a stale value.

Requirements

  • The site name code nearest each workplace; the feed reports monitoring sites, not arbitrary coordinates
  • Written approval from ARPANSA for commercial use or redistribution, per the website copyright terms
  • Attribution as "© Commonwealth of Australia as represented by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA)"
Authentication
No key. The XML file is served over plain HTTPS; ARPANSA's website copyright terms govern its use.

Limits

  • Website material is for personal, non-commercial, or educational use in unaltered form; commercial use needs ARPANSA's prior written approval
  • Readings exist only at the monitoring sites; there is no forecast and no interpolation between cities
  • A site can report offline with a stale utcdatetime, as Macquarie Island did on a recent read
  • Calibrated historical data is provided by request, and ARPANSA notes a cost may apply depending on the request

Access and pricing

Questions and answers

How often does the feed update?
ARPANSA's detectors collect data continuously and the public chart updates every minute. Each location in uvvalues.xml carries its own utcdatetime, so you can see when a site last reported.
Which sites are in the feed?
On a recent read: Adelaide, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Emerald, Gold Coast, Kingston, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney, and Townsville in Australia, and Casey, Davis, Mawson, and Macquarie Island in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic.
Can I use the data commercially?
ARPANSA's website terms allow copying and display for personal, non-commercial, or educational use in unaltered form with attribution. Re-transmission, distribution, or commercial use needs ARPANSA's prior written approval. Historical one-minute archives on data.gov.au are released under Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 Australia.
