About

Met Éireann lists its open datasets on data.gov.ie. The forecast API at openaccess.pf.api.met.ie returns a ten-day XML forecast for a latitude and longitude. Weather warnings are served as JSON at www.met.ie/Open_Data/json/warning_IRELAND.json and as an RSS feed. Near real time observations from the TUCSON automatic weather stations are published at opendata2.met.ie/obs_public for the last eight days. HARMONIE model output at 2 km resolution is published hourly as GRIB2 under opendata2.met.ie/nwp/.

Through Fibric, an operator reads the forecast and warnings for your sites and proposes a start time, a delivery hold, or a staff notice for your approval, with the warning attached.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from Met Éireann Open Data and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

  • Ten-day location forecasts from the forecast API: /metno-wdb2ts/locationforecast with lat and long, returned as XML
  • Current weather warnings as JSON (warning_IRELAND.json), as RSS (warningsxml/rss.xml) and as a widget
  • Near real time observations from TUCSON automatic weather stations at opendata2.met.ie/obs_public, raw and not quality controlled
  • Live text forecasts: national, regional, sea area, coastal, county, three-day, inland lakes and farming commentary, as XML and JSON
  • HARMONIE numerical weather prediction files at 2 km resolution, about 48 hours ahead, as GRIB2 with JSON metadata
  • Sea area warning polygons as SHP, KML and GeoJSON, and archived warnings from April 2012 to December 2024 as ODS

  • Hold van routes during an orange wind warning

    When a warning covers a route's counties, propose a hold on departures and a revised cover forecast for the venues on that route.

Requirements

  • The latitude and longitude of each site for the forecast API
  • A parser for the wdb2ts XML forecast and for the warnings JSON
  • GRIB2 tooling if you read the HARMONIE files
  • Attribution that names Met Éireann as source, the licence, a liability disclaimer, and any modifications
Authentication
None. The datasets and the forecast API are open URLs with no key or registration.

Limits

  • The forecast API is offered on a best-effort basis
  • If forecast data is shown on a public website, current Met Éireann warnings must be shown too and expired ones removed
  • Warning content must not be materially altered: timing, area and severity stay as issued
  • AWS observations are raw and unchecked, and cover only the last eight days

Which licence applies to Met Éireann open data?
Most datasets carry Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. The forecast API, warnings and live text forecasts use the Met Éireann Custom Open Data Licence, based on CC BY 4.0 with conditions on showing current warnings and not altering them.
How far ahead does the forecast API reach?
Ten days. The endpoint is http://openaccess.pf.api.met.ie/metno-wdb2ts/locationforecast with lat and long parameters and returns XML. The dataset page lists its update frequency as continuous.
What attribution does Met Éireann ask for?
Five statements: copyright Met Éireann, source www.met.ie, the licence statement, a disclaimer that Met Éireann accepts no liability for errors or omissions, and a note of any modifications.
