About

MSC GeoMet and MSC Datamart are the open data services of the Meteorological Service of Canada, part of Environment and Climate Change Canada. GeoMet serves weather, climate, and environmental data as WMS and WCS layers at geo.weather.gc.ca and as OGC API collections at api.weather.gc.ca. Datamart at dd.weather.gc.ca holds the raw files: warnings, public forecasts, observations, radar, and model output, kept for 30 days and announced over AMQP as they land.

What you can build

    Watch Datamart warning files for the regions you ship to. When a warning is issued, the operator proposes holding the affected orders and a customer notice, and waits for your decision.

  • Reroute crews around a squall line

    Read radar and short-range model layers for the service area. The operator proposes a stop order that avoids the worst window and shows the layer time it used.

    With Route Resequence

  • Send a heat and air quality advisory to sites

    Read AQHI forecasts and air temperature layers for each site. When the outlook crosses your trigger, the operator proposes a notice to site leads with the reading attached.

Requirements

  • The bounding box or station identifiers for each site you want to watch
  • An AMQPS client, such as Sarracenia, if you retrieve Datamart files on a schedule
  • Attribution reading 'Data Source: Environment and Climate Change Canada' where the data is shown
  • A GetCapabilities read of geo.weather.gc.ca to pick the WMS layer names you need
Authentication
No key. Access to GeoMet and Datamart is anonymous and free of charge; scheduled retrieval must use the AMQPS notification service rather than polling.

Limits

  • Sustained use near 86,400 requests per day, about one per second, may have access limited unless you contact MSC first
  • OGC API queries return at most 10,000 features per request
  • Datamart keeps files for 30 days; older data is a cost-recovered archive request
  • WMS GetMap accepts a single layer per request and no time ranges; bulk tile retrieval is prohibited

Do you need an account or key?
No. GeoMet and Datamart are anonymous and free of charge. MSC asks that scheduled retrieval use the AMQPS push service instead of polling directory listings, and that consistent traffic near 86,400 requests a day be discussed with them first.
How long do Datamart files stay online?
A 30-day retention period applies on dd.weather.gc.ca and the hpfx.collab.science.gc.ca alternative. The directory tree is dated by day, with a today directory for the current day. Older data is a cost-recovered archive service.
What licence covers the data?
The Environment and Climate Change Canada Data Services End-use Licence. It allows copying, modifying, and distributing the information for any lawful purpose, including commercial use, with attribution. Weather alerts must not be altered in content or intent.
