Earthquakes Canada

Significant Canadian seismic events by Atom feed, plus FDSN dataselect waveforms and station metadata from Natural Resources Canada.

About

Earthquakes Canada, part of Natural Resources Canada, publishes an Atom feed titled Canada's Significant Seismic Events and two FDSN web services at earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/fdsnws. The dataselect service returns time series in miniSEED for a network, station, location, channel, and time window. The station service returns FDSN StationXML at the level you ask for, filtered by box or radius. Feed entries give magnitude, distance to a named place, date and time in UTC, and a georss point.

Through Fibric, an operator watches the Atom feed for events near your Canadian sites and proposes a check or an annotation for your approval, noting that the entry was an automated product.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from Earthquakes Canada and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Significant Canadian events through the Atom feed zone-canada-en.atom: title, georss:point, updated, link, and a table of UTC time, magnitude, latitude, and longitude
  • Waveforms in miniSEED through fdsnws/dataselect/1/query with starttime, endtime, network, station, location, channel, and quality
  • Station metadata in StationXML through fdsnws/station/1/query with level, box and radius filters, and includeavailability
  • Service versions through the version/ resources and machine-readable definitions in application.wadl for each service
  • The National Earthquake Database bulletin search and Did You Feel It reports, linked from the Earthquakes Canada site
  • ShakeMaps for events near Canada above magnitude 4 or reported felt, per the Earthquakes Canada FAQ

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Annotate a metric dip with the quake behind it

When a feed entry lands near a site and a metric moves in the same hour, the operator proposes an annotation naming the event, its magnitude, and the feed link. You approve; the chart keeps the note.

    With Change Annotation

  • Triage building alarms after a felt event

Vibration, door, and lift alarms that fire within minutes of a feed entry are grouped and proposed as one incident with the event's UTC time and distance.

    With Alarm Triage

  • Start the day with the overnight events

Entries posted overnight within a radius of each Canadian site appear in the brief with magnitude and place, flagged as automated until a reviewed solution appears.

    With Morning Brief

  • Bring a plant inspection forward

Above the magnitude you set, the operator proposes advancing the next inspection at the nearest site and leaves a record citing the feed entry.

    With Inspection Due

Requirements

  • A polling schedule for the Atom feed; no push delivery is documented
  • Network, station, and channel codes from the station service before requesting waveforms
  • Attribution to Earthquakes Canada, Natural Resources Canada, and a statement that the copy is not endorsed by the Government of Canada
Authentication
None for the Atom feed and the public FDSN query endpoints; each service also lists a queryauth resource, which Fibric does not use.

Limits

  • Feed entries state they are automated and not reviewed by a seismologist; details are subject to change
  • The FDSN pages document dataselect and station only; no FDSN event service is listed
  • Commercial reproduction of NRCan content requires written permission under the site's terms and conditions
  • The FAQ notes the real-time seismogram viewer runs about five minutes behind for processing

Access and pricing

Reference listing. Public feed access is separate from Fibric integration. If you request this feed, your quote covers the build, usage, and support.

Questions and answers

Which FDSN services does Earthquakes Canada offer?
Two: dataselect, for time series in miniSEED, and station, for metadata in FDSN StationXML. Each has query/, version/, and application.wadl resources. The pages point to fdsn.org/webservices for the full specification and list no event service.
Is the Atom feed reviewed by a seismologist?
Entries carry the note that they are an automated product not reviewed by a seismologist and that details are subject to change. Treat magnitude and location as provisional and re-read the entry link later.
What are the terms for using the data?
Natural Resources Canada permits reproduction for personal or public non-commercial purposes without permission, with attribution and a statement that the copy is not endorsed by the Government of Canada. Commercial reproduction needs written permission. The archived catalogue on open.canada.ca is under the Open Government Licence - Canada.
