About

The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics monitors the punctuality and reliability of major domestic airlines operating between Australian airports. The data.gov.au dataset Domestic Airlines - On Time Performance holds one CSV, otp_time_series_web.csv, with a row per route, airline and month from January 2004, plus a notes file. Routes qualify when passenger load averaged 8 000 or more a month over the previous six months and two or more airlines competed on them. A flight counts as on time when it arrives at or departs from the gate before 15 minutes after the scheduled time; diverted and cancelled flights never count as on time.

An operator reads the rows for your ports and proposes a benchmark, a cover plan or a root-cause note for your approval.

Requirements

  • The Departing_Port and Arriving_Port names you serve, as spelled in the CSV
  • A monthly job that re-downloads the CSV, since the file carries the full series
  • Attribution to BITRE under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia
  • A rule for routes that drop out when they no longer meet the passenger or competition threshold
Authentication
No key and no registration. The CSV and notes file are direct downloads from data.gov.au, and the CKAN package_show API returns the resource URLs.

Limits

  • Monthly counts per route and airline, not flight-level records or delay causes
  • Only competitive routes above the passenger threshold appear, so smaller ports are absent
  • The notes file dates from 2016 and names the airlines reporting then; capture methods differ between ACARS and manual records
  • Aggregates are reported by the airlines and audited internally by them before publication

What is the license?
The data.gov.au record lists Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia. You may reuse the data with attribution to the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics. The contact point on the record is avstats@infrastructure.gov.au.
Which flights count as on time or cancelled?
A departure is on time if it leaves the gate before 15 minutes after the scheduled time; an arrival if it reaches the gate before 15 minutes after the scheduled time. Diverted and cancelled flights are not on time. A cancellation is a flight removed from service within 7 days of scheduled departure.
How far back and how current is the series?
The CSV starts in January 2004 and the record's temporal coverage ran to 31 July 2026 when read, with the file last modified on 23 August 2026. BITRE has gathered the data since November 2003, with some airlines reporting from later dates.
