About

Maritime Safety Information (MSI) is the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's portal for the Worldwide Navigational Warning Service, which issues warnings for NAVAREA IV, NAVAREA XII, HYDROLANT, HYDROPAC, and HYDROARC. Its REST API also serves the Anti-Shipping Activity Messages database, the World Port Index, Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit positions, the NGA List of Lights, Radio Navigational Aids, and the Notice to Mariners archive.

Through Fibric, an operator polls the in-force warnings for the areas your voyages cross and proposes a reroute, a delay notice, or a briefing item for your approval, with the warning number and text attached.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from NGA Maritime Safety Information and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

  • Active, cancelled, or all navigational warnings from /api/publications/broadcast-warn, filtered by navArea, subregion, message number, year, or issue date
  • Anti-Shipping Activity Messages (ASAM): reports of hostile acts, retrievable by subregion, NAVAREA, reference number, or occurrence date
  • World Port Index entries from /api/publications/world-port-index: location, physical characteristics, facilities, and services of major ports and terminals
  • Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit records from /api/publications/modu by name, status, navArea, region, bounding box, or source date
  • Lights, buoys, radiobeacons, and DGPS stations from /api/publications/ngalol by volume, aid number, geographic header, or bounding box
  • Notice to Mariners chart corrections, charts affected, and publication corrections from /api/publications/ntm by notice number, chart, region, or port code
  • Radio Navigational Aids (Pub. 117) stations, time signals, and warning broadcast stations from /api/publications/radio-navaids

    The operator matches warnings and MODU positions against inbound container routes and proposes an exception on the shipments concerned, leaving the query and warning text with the case.

Requirements

  • The NAVAREA or US charting subregion for each area you watch; broadcast-warn/navareas and broadcast-warn/subregions list the values
  • A required output value of json, xml, or csv on every query
  • Network reach to msi.nga.mil
  • The disclaimer NGA requires on any product that reproduces its data or carries the NGA name, seal, or initials
Authentication
No key or account. The REST API at msi.nga.mil/api is open, and every query takes a required output parameter of json, xml, or csv.

Limits

  • Notice to Mariners 11/2026 was the final issue; the NTM pages remain available but are no longer updated
  • NGA provides the geospatial information as is, with no warranty as to accuracy, under 10 U.S. Code 456
  • Using the NGA name, seal, or initials to imply approval or endorsement is prohibited under 10 U.S.C. 425
  • The OpenAPI description lists no authentication scheme and states no rate limit

Questions and answers

How often do the warnings update?
The MSI site states the online navigational warning query is updated every 15 minutes. The Worldwide Navigational Warning Service broadcast desk is staffed 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
Which formats does the API return?
json, xml, or csv, chosen by the required output parameter on each query. The Query Directions guide also describes HTML output for viewing and printing in a browser.
Can I still get Notice to Mariners data?
As an archive. NGA states that Notice to Mariners 11/2026 was the final publication and the page is no longer updated. Copies from 29/1999 to 11/2026 remain available, and the ntm endpoints return chart corrections, charts affected, and publication corrections by notice number.
