NOAA CoastWatch ERDDAP

Satellite ocean grids from NOAA CoastWatch, subset by area and time through ERDDAP's griddap and tabledap URLs, no login.

About

ERDDAP is a data server that NOAA CoastWatch, part of NESDIS STAR, runs at coastwatch.noaa.gov. It lists over a thousand datasets, most of them satellite grids: sea surface temperature from the geo-polar blended analysis and ACSPO, chlorophyll and Kd490 from VIIRS and OLCI, sea surface salinity from SMOS and SMAP, blended wind stress, sea ice, and Coral Reef Watch bleaching products. A single URL names the dataset, the variables, the area and time slice, and the file type. No login is offered.

Through Fibric, an operator pulls the cells over the waters your business depends on, compares them with your own records, and proposes a plan change for your approval, with the request URL on file.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from NOAA CoastWatch ERDDAP and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • griddap: subsets of gridded datasets by start, stride, and stop on time, latitude, and longitude, with last for the newest slice
  • tabledap: tabular datasets such as the satellite and in situ salinity matchups, filtered by variable constraints with orderBy and distinct
  • Sea surface temperature: the Geo-polar Blended daily 5 km analysis (noaacwBLENDEDsstDNDaily) and ACSPO super-collated SST with thermal fronts
  • Ocean colour: VIIRS and OLCI chlorophyll and Kd490, daily, weekly, and monthly, in near-real-time and science-quality versions
  • Sea surface salinity from SMOS and SMAP, blended wind stress, sea ice, and Coral Reef Watch HotSpot, Degree Heating Week, and Bleaching Alert Area
  • Dataset metadata from /info/datasetID/index.json, the allDatasets table, full-text search as .json, and RSS per dataset
  • Response file types including .csv, .json, .nc, .mat, .esriAscii, OPeNDAP .dods, and .png or .pdf images

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Plan seasonal buying against sea temperature

The operator reads the blended SST grid over the fishing grounds or coasts your products come from, compares this year with the archive, and proposes an adjustment to the season build for your approval.

    With Demand Outlook, Season Build

  • Explain a coastal demand miss

When a beach resort or marina site misses plan, the operator pulls SST and wind stress for those weeks and reports how much of the variance the water accounts for, with the request URL.

    With Forecast Variance, Site Benchmark

  • Hold marine bookings on a bleaching alert

Coral Reef Watch HotSpot and Bleaching Alert Area grids flag stressed reefs. The operator matches them to booked excursions and proposes a hold or a reschedule notice for your approval.

    With Weather Hold, Cover Forecast

Requirements

  • The datasetID of each product you follow, found by search or in the allDatasets table
  • Variable names and the time, latitude, and longitude bounds of the cells you need, with times in ISO 8601 UTC
  • Requests without internal spaces and with values percent-encoded; requests are case sensitive
  • gzip in the Accept-Encoding header if you want compressed responses; ERDDAP does not serve zip files
Authentication
None. Every request is an HTTPS GET with the query in the URL; this server offers no login and holds no private datasets.

Limits

  • Each dataset carries its own license attribute; check it on the Data Access Form before reuse
  • Large time ranges can time out; the documentation advises splitting a big request into smaller chunks
  • Almost every dataset here is a grid; only a few tabular datasets are listed
  • Near-real-time products are followed by science-quality versions; the two appear as separate datasets

Access and pricing

Questions and answers

Do I need a key to read CoastWatch ERDDAP?
No. You build a URL with the datasetID, the file type, and a query, and send an HTTP GET. The same URL works in a browser or a script. Data licences differ by dataset and are shown in each dataset's license metadata.
How do I subset a grid?
griddap URLs take the form datasetID.fileType?variable[(start):stride:(stop)][(lat)][(lon)]. Index or value syntax is allowed, last selects the newest slice, and times are ISO 8601 UTC. Change the file type to .csv, .json, .nc, or .png for a graph.
How do I find out which datasets exist?
Use search/index.json?searchFor= for full-text search, or query the allDatasets table, which holds a row per active dataset with datasetID, title, summary, institution, and access URLs. info/datasetID/index.json returns the variables and attributes of one dataset.
