About

The British Geological Survey publishes three earthquake feeds from earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk: recent earthquakes in and around the UK, recent UK induced seismicity, and recent world earthquakes. Each comes as GeoRSS XML and as KML. Items carry origin date and time, locality, latitude and longitude, depth in kilometres, and local magnitude to one decimal place. The UK and world list pages cover the last 60 days, the induced list the last 50, and the database search reaches back to the year 1000.

Through Fibric, an operator watches the UK feed for events near your sites, then proposes a check of lifts, alarms, or inspections for your approval. Every proposal records the BGS event it came from.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from BGS Earthquake Feeds and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Recent UK earthquakes through the GeoRSS feed MhSeismology.xml and the KML file recent_uk_events.kml
  • Recent UK induced seismicity, events BGS attributes to human activity, through MhInduced.xml and recent_uk_induced.kml
  • Recent world earthquakes through WorldSeismology.xml and recent_world_events.kml
  • Per item: origin date and time, locality, lat/long, depth in km, and ML magnitude, with a link to the BGS event page
  • Channel lastBuildDate and item pubDate, so you can tell when the feed was rebuilt and when each event was posted
  • Historical events by region, date, depth, and magnitude through the Earthquake Database Search, exported as CSV or KML

What you can build

  • Check lifts after a felt UK earthquake

    When a UK event lands within your radius of a building, the operator proposes a lift status check and a reset request to the lift vendor. You approve. The record keeps the BGS event link.

  • Explain a burst of building alarms

    A quake can trip vibration and door alarms across a site at once. The operator matches the alarm burst to a BGS item by time and place and proposes grouping them under one cause.

  • Add the event to the morning brief

    Overnight UK or induced events near your sites appear in the brief with magnitude, depth, and distance, so the day starts with the fact rather than a rumour.

  • Schedule a post-event inspection

    Above a magnitude you set, the operator proposes bringing forward structural or equipment inspections at the affected site and leaves a record of why.

Requirements

  • A polling schedule for the three XML feeds; BGS documents no push mechanism
  • The coordinates of the sites you want to match against feed items
  • An attribution line reading 'Contains British Geological Survey materials © UKRI' with the year wherever the data is shown
Authentication
None. The feeds are public HTTP resources on quakes.bgs.ac.uk and need no key or account.

Limits

  • BGS publishes no update interval; the feed's lastBuildDate is the only timing signal
  • Locations and magnitudes may change as BGS re-analyses events, so an item can differ from an earlier read
  • Depths are rounded to the nearest kilometre and anything shallower than 1 km is listed as 1 km
  • The world feed carries only significant events; it is not a global catalogue

Questions and answers

Which feeds does BGS publish?
Three, each in GeoRSS XML and KML: recent UK earthquakes, recent UK induced seismicity, and recent world earthquakes. The UK list page covers the last 60 days and the induced list the last 50 days. Older events come from the Earthquake Database Search, which spans the year 1000 to the present.
Do I need a key to read the feeds?
No. The feeds are plain HTTP files under quakes.bgs.ac.uk. BGS delivers them under the Open Government Licence and asks for the attribution 'Contains British Geological Survey materials © UKRI' with the year.
How current is an item, and can it change?
The channel carries a lastBuildDate and each item a pubDate. BGS states that locations and magnitudes may change as events are re-analysed and revised, so treat an item as provisional and re-read it later.
