BIS Data Portal

Central bank policy rates, credit, property prices, exchange rates, and banking statistics from the BIS SDMX API, with no key.

About

The BIS Data Portal at data.bis.org publishes the statistics the Bank for International Settlements compiles with central banks and other national authorities. Its SDMX RESTful API at stats.bis.org/api/v2 is a subset of the SDMX REST v2.1.0 standard and returns data as SDMX 2.1 XML, SDMX-JSON 1.0.0, or SDMX-CSV 1.0.0. Dataflows include central bank policy rates (WS_CBPOL), total credit to the non-financial sector (WS_TC), selected and detailed residential property prices (WS_SPP, WS_DPP), effective exchange rates (WS_EER), US dollar exchange rates (WS_XRU), consumer prices (WS_LONG_CPI), and the locational and consolidated banking statistics.

Through Fibric, an operator reads the series for the jurisdictions you finance or sell in, compares a release with the previous one, and proposes a review of a credit term or a market assumption for your approval. The dataflow, key, and release date go on the record.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from BIS Data Portal and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Central bank policy rates (WS_CBPOL) and central bank total assets (WS_CBTA)
  • Total credit to the non-financial sector (WS_TC), credit-to-GDP gaps (WS_CREDIT_GAP), and debt service ratios (WS_DSR)
  • Selected and detailed residential property prices (WS_SPP, WS_DPP) and commercial property prices (WS_CPP)
  • Effective exchange rates (WS_EER), US dollar exchange rates (WS_XRU), and consumer prices statistics (WS_LONG_CPI)
  • Locational and consolidated banking statistics (WS_LBS_D_PUB, WS_CBS_PUB), international debt securities (WS_DEBT_SEC2_PUB), and global liquidity indicators (WS_GLI)
  • The release calendar as its own dataflow (BIS_REL_CAL) and data availability queries under /availability
  • Data queries at /data/dataflow/BIS/{resourceID}/{version}/{key} with * wildcards, component filters on TIME_PERIOD, updatedAfter, and lastNObservations

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Review credit terms when a policy rate changes

The operator watches WS_CBPOL for the jurisdictions where you extend credit. On a rate change it proposes a review of credit holds and early-payment discounts, quoting the new rate and the date it applies from.

With Credit Hold, Early Pay Discount

  • Reprice cross-border lists on effective exchange rates

Each month the operator reads WS_EER and WS_XRU for your invoicing currencies and proposes a price-list review where the effective rate has drifted from the rate your list was set on.

    With Price List Drift

  • Put credit and property cycles in the board pack

Before a planning cycle the operator pulls total credit, the credit-to-GDP gap, and residential property prices for your markets into one table and proposes it as a demand-outlook exhibit with release dates.

    With Board Pack, Demand Outlook

Requirements

  • The dataflow id and version for each topic, from /structure/dataflow/BIS/*/+, and its dimension order from the data structure
  • Reporting country and other dimension codes for the key, or * to wildcard a position
  • Network reach to stats.bis.org and data.bis.org
  • Citation of the BIS as the source wherever the statistics are reproduced
Authentication
None. The BIS SDMX API and the bulk downloads are open, subject to the terms of permitted use of BIS statistics.

Limits

  • Data responses come only in SDMX 2.1 formats (generic or structure-specific XML, SDMX-JSON 1.0.0, SDMX-CSV 1.0.0); SDMX 3.0 data formats are not served
  • Most datasets are quarterly or monthly; only bilateral exchange rates (weekly) and the daily series for policy rates and effective exchange rates move faster
  • Figures rely on national statistics as communicated by central banks and national authorities, so coverage per series follows the reporting jurisdictions
  • The v2 API differs from the earlier v1 endpoints; queries written for stats.bis.org/api/v1 have to be rewritten

Questions and answers

Does the BIS API need registration or a key?
No. Requests to stats.bis.org/api/v2 are open, and the bulk download page offers each topic as a single zipped CSV or SDMX 2.1 file. Use is governed by the terms of permitted use, which require citing the BIS as the source of the statistics.
Which formats does a data query return?
SDMX 2.1 generic and structure-specific XML, their time-series variants, SDMX-JSON 1.0.0, and SDMX-CSV 1.0.0, chosen with the Accept header. Structure queries additionally return SDMX 3.0 XML and SDMX-JSON 2.0.0.
How often do the datasets update?
By topic: banking, debt securities, credit, debt service ratios, global liquidity, and exchange-traded derivatives quarterly; OTC derivatives outstanding semiannually; the Triennial Survey every three years; property prices and consumer prices monthly; bilateral exchange rates weekly; effective exchange rates monthly and daily; policy rates daily and monthly.
