CFTC Public Reporting Environment

Weekly Commitments of Traders positioning by futures market from the CFTC, as Socrata datasets with CSV and JSON endpoints.

About

The Public Reporting Environment is the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's data portal at publicreporting.cftc.gov, built on Socrata. It holds the Commitments of Traders reports: open interest and positions by trader class for every futures and options market where 20 or more traders hold reportable positions. Each report has a futures-only and a combined futures-and-options dataset, and each dataset has a SODA endpoint you can query, filter, and download.

On Fibric, an operator reads the Tuesday positioning for the contracts behind your input costs, compares it with the prior week, and proposes a hedge review or a purchase timing note for your approval.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from CFTC Public Reporting Environment and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Legacy report datasets 6dca-aqww (futures only) and jun7-fc8e (combined): commercial, non-commercial, and nonreportable positions by exchange
  • Disaggregated datasets 72hh-3qpy and kh3c-gbw2: Producer/Merchant/Processor/User, Swap Dealers, Managed Money, and Other Reportables by commodity
  • Traders in Financial Futures datasets gpe5-46if and yw9f-hn96: positions in currencies, Treasury securities, and VIX by four financial trader classes
  • Supplemental (CIT) dataset 4zgm-a668: index trader positions in 13 agricultural markets, combined futures and options only
  • Per-row fields such as market_and_exchange_names, report_date_as_yyyy_mm_dd, open_interest_all, change_in_open_interest_all, and traders_tot_all
  • SODA endpoints at publicreporting.cftc.gov/resource/<dataset-id>.json or .csv with SoQL parameters such as $order and $limit

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Time a bulk purchase against positioning

Read the Disaggregated dataset for the contracts behind a raw material each Friday. The operator adds the week's change in Managed Money and Producer/Merchant positions to a draft purchase order for the buyer's review.

With Purchase Order Draft, Unit Cost

  • Brief the Monday stand-up on hedged markets

Each Monday the operator lists the markets your finance team hedges, the new open interest, and the week-on-week change, and leaves the report date on every line.

    With Morning Brief

  • Review fuel reserves when commercial positions swing

Pull the Disaggregated petroleum and natural gas rows. When commercial positions move sharply, the operator proposes a review of reserve levels and purchase timing, with the rows attached.

Requirements

  • The dataset id for each report and grouping you want, from the CFTC's dataset list
  • A polling schedule keyed to the Friday 3:30 p.m. Eastern release; data is as of the preceding Tuesday
  • Request pacing that stays within Socrata's per-IP throttling for untokened calls
Authentication
No key. The CFTC says it is not providing app tokens for the Public Reporting APIs; requests without a token are throttled by source IP address.

Limits

  • Positions are weekly, as of Tuesday, released Friday; there is no intraday or daily view
  • The CFTC issues no app tokens for these APIs, so requests are throttled by IP and cannot be raised with a token
  • Nonreportable positions are a residual: the report cannot say whether they are commercial or non-commercial
  • Only markets with 20 or more traders at or above the CFTC reporting levels appear

Access and pricing

Questions and answers

When is a new Commitments of Traders report available?
The CFTC says reports are generally published each Friday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time, using data from the immediately preceding Tuesday. Reporting firms submit on Wednesday morning, and the CFTC checks the data before the Friday release.
Do I need a Socrata app token?
No. The CFTC states it is not providing tokens for the Public Reporting APIs and that you may query without one if you do not overuse the system. Socrata throttles untokened requests by source IP address.
How far back does the history go?
The CFTC gives the Legacy report from January 15, 1986, the Supplemental CIT report from January 3, 2006, and the Disaggregated and Traders in Financial Futures reports from June 13, 2006.
