Real-time hydrometric data

Water level and discharge for Canadian hydrometric stations from Environment and Climate Change Canada's Datamart and GeoMet services.

About

Real-time hydrometric data is published by Environment and Climate Change Canada from the Water Survey of Canada network, run with the provinces, territories, and other agencies. It carries water level and discharge from over 2100 stations for the last 30 days, as CSV files on MSC Datamart and as OGC API collections on api.weather.gc.ca, alongside HYDAT historical means and peaks.

An operator on Fibric reads the stations near your sites and routes and proposes a hold, a reroute, or a notice when a level crosses your threshold. Nothing moves until you approve; the receipt names the station and the QA/QC grade.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from Real-time hydrometric data and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Hourly and daily station CSVs at dd.weather.gc.ca/today/hydrometric/csv/{PROVTERR}/{FREQUENCY}/, one file per station and one per province
  • Columns per row: ID, Date, Water Level (m), Discharge (cms), each with Grade, Symbol, and QA/QC
  • The hydrometric-realtime collection on api.weather.gc.ca with STATION_NUMBER, DATETIME, DATETIME_LST, LEVEL, and DISCHARGE
  • Station names, provinces, and coordinates from hydrometric-stations and the Datamart station GeoJSON
  • HYDAT history from hydrometric-daily-mean, hydrometric-monthly-mean, hydrometric-annual-statistics, and hydrometric-annual-peaks
  • New-file notices over the AMQPS service for scheduled retrieval

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Prepare a riverside site before a crest

Watch the hourly Datamart file for the gauge above a site. When water level passes your line, the operator proposes the preparation checklist and shows the QA/QC grade of the reading.

    With Storm Prep

  • Hold shipments into a flooded region

Read realtime discharge for stations along a corridor. When several exceed your threshold, the operator proposes holding orders bound for that region and a customer notice for your approval.

    With Weather Hold

  • Reroute crews around high water

Read levels at the crossings on a route. The operator proposes a stop order that avoids the crossing and records the station and time it used.

    With Route Resequence

Requirements

  • The STATION_NUMBER and two-letter province or territory code for each gauge you watch
  • An AMQPS client if you pull Datamart files on a schedule; MSC reserves wget and curl for ad hoc use
  • The attribution 'Data Source: Environment and Climate Change Canada' wherever the data is shown
Authentication
No key. Datamart and the OGC API are anonymous and free of charge; scheduled retrieval must subscribe to AMQPS notices instead of polling.

Limits

  • Hourly Datamart files hold only the last two complete days plus today; daily files hold the last 30 complete days
  • Real-time values carry QA/QC grades from 1, preliminary, to 4, approved; early readings may be revised
  • Systematic retrieval must use the AMQPS notification service; wget and curl are for ad hoc pulls only
  • Datamart timestamps are in the station's Local Standard Time; the OGC API gives both DATETIME and DATETIME_LST

Questions and answers

Which stations are covered?
Real-time water level and discharge from over 2100 stations across Canada, operated by the Water Survey of Canada with the provinces, territories, and other agencies. The station list is a GeoJSON file on Datamart and the hydrometric-stations collection on api.weather.gc.ca.
How much history is available?
The realtime collection and the Datamart CSVs cover the last 30 days. Longer records come from HYDAT through the hydrometric-daily-mean, hydrometric-monthly-mean, hydrometric-annual-statistics, and hydrometric-annual-peaks collections.
What licence applies?
The Environment and Climate Change Canada Data Services End-use Licence. It permits copying, modifying, and distributing the data for any lawful purpose, including commercial use, with the attribution 'Data Source: Environment and Climate Change Canada'.
