IOC Sea Level Station Monitoring Facility

Real-time sea level readings and station status from the IOC-UNESCO Sea Level Station Monitoring Facility API.

About

The Sea Level Station Monitoring Facility is run by the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) for UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. It collects real-time readings from tide gauge stations operated by Member States and shows their status for tsunami monitoring. The SLSMF API v2 serves station metadata, sensor lists, catalog entries, and raw sea level values per station, plus a research endpoint with daily automated quality control.

Through Fibric you watch the stations near your ports, terminals, or coastal sites and pass level changes and station outages to operators that propose notices or schedule changes for your approval.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from IOC Sea Level Station Monitoring Facility and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Stations through /v2/stations, ordered by lasttime, delay, interval, or lastupdate, with a datastream filter (gts, web, bgan, ftp, dart)
  • Station metadata and the latest station message through /v2/stations/{code} and /v2/stations/{code}/message
  • Raw sea level values per sensor through /v2/stations/{code}/data, with includesensors and nofilter options
  • Quality-controlled sea level through /v2/research/stations/{code}/sensors/{sensor}/data, with completeness, shift, spike, and flat-line filters
  • Sensor types such as prs (pressure), rad (radar), flt (float), enc (encoder), pwl (primary water level), and bub (bubbler)
  • Catalog entries by SSC code or by external code from ioc, ptwc, gloss, uhslc, psmsl, and sonel through /v2/catalog

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Escalate a tsunami-scale level change

Evacuation Roster watches the gauges nearest your coastal sites and, when readings move outside the recent range, proposes a roster check and notice for your approval, with the station readings attached.

    With Evacuation Roster

  • Hold dock work on a surge

Dock Schedule reads the nearest station and proposes shifting berth and loading windows when sea level runs above the tide table, leaving a record of the readings behind the change.

    With Dock Schedule

  • Notice when a station goes quiet

Severe Weather Notice reads station delay and lasttime and proposes a notice to your team when a gauge you rely on stops reporting during a storm.

    With Severe Weather Notice

Requirements

  • A gauges account approved for the gauges_API group and a named API key
  • Station codes from the IOC Sea Level Station Catalogue (SSC) for the sites you watch
  • Non-commercial use, or a direct agreement with the original data providers
Authentication
An API key sent in the X-API-KEY header. You register a gauges account on ioc-sealevelmonitoring.org, request the Access gauges API (gauges_API) group, and create a named key after approval.

Limits

  • /v2/stations/{code}/data returns at most 30 days or 150 000 records per request; the research endpoint at most 365 days
  • Raw data has undergone no quality control; the research endpoint applies daily automated checks
  • Data and products may not be used for any commercial purpose without the original data providers' consent
  • Sampling and transmission frequencies vary by station, and the facility does not guarantee availability

Access and pricing

Questions and answers

Do I need an account to call the SLSMF API?
Yes for version 2. You log in or register on the SLSMF api page, tick Access gauges API (gauges_API) at registration, wait for admin approval, then name and submit a key. Requests carry it in the X-API-KEY header.
How much data can one request return?
The station data endpoint is capped at 30 days or 150 000 records per request. The research endpoint returns up to 365 days per page and 7 days by default, with days_per_page and page for longer spans.
Can the data be used commercially?
Not under the facility's terms. The disclaimer states that data and products on the site may not be used for any commercial purposes, and that commercial users must contact the original data providers directly.
