About

The Japan Meteorological Agency publishes its Disaster Prevention Information XML Format bulletins through Atom feeds on www.data.jma.go.jp. The eqvol feed carries earthquake, tsunami, and volcano messages: seismic intensity reports, hypocentre information, tsunami warnings and advisories, volcanic warnings, ash-fall forecasts, and Earthquake Early Warning. Each feed entry links to one XML message written to the JMA schema. Distribution is pull only; JMA ended push delivery on 1 September 2020.

Through Fibric, an operator polls the feed, matches messages to your Japanese sites by region, and proposes a shutdown notice, a staffing change, or a crew hold for your approval.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from JMA Disaster Prevention Information XML and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

  • Volcanic Warning and Forecast (噴火警報・予報), Ash Fall Forecast (降灰予報), and Earthquake Early Warning (緊急地震速報) messages

    When a seismic intensity report names a region holding your property, the operator drafts a shutdown notice with the reported intensity and time for your approval.

    When a tsunami warning or advisory covers a coastal area with active jobs, the operator proposes holding dispatch for those jobs until the message is lifted.

    After a hypocentre report above your intensity threshold, the operator proposes a contact-centre surge roster and shows you the bulletin it acted on.

Requirements

  • A poller that fetches the feed no faster than needed and downloads each message file only once
  • A Japanese-language parser for the JMA XML schema; feeds and messages are written in Japanese
  • Area codes for your sites taken from the JMA dictionary and code tables, so messages can be matched to a region
  • The JMA format specification, schema files, and code tables from xml.kishou.go.jp
Authentication
No key or registration. The feeds and message files are open HTTPS downloads under JMA's Public Data License.

Limits

  • JMA blocks the IP address of any client that downloads more than 10 GB in one day
  • High-frequency feeds keep at least the last 10 minutes; long-term feeds keep several days, so fill gaps from the long-term feed
  • Push delivery ended in 2020; you must poll, or take the feed through the Japan Meteorological Business Support Center
  • Content under Articles 17 and 23 of the Meteorological Service Act carries restrictions on use in forecasting or warning services

Questions and answers

How often do the JMA Atom feeds update?
The high-frequency feeds (regular, extra, eqvol, other) update every minute and hold at least the last 10 minutes of entries. The long-term feeds with the _l suffix update every hour and hold several days of entries.
Can JMA push messages to your server?
No. JMA ended push delivery on 1 September 2020. Clients pull the Atom feeds and fetch each linked XML message. Commercial redistribution is available separately through the Japan Meteorological Business Support Center.
What licence covers JMA bulletins?
JMA content is released under Japan's Public Data License version 1.0, which JMA states is compatible with Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. Cite the source as the Japan Meteorological Agency website with the page URL, and note any edits.
