OECD Data API

Economic Outlook, consumer prices, unemployment, and national accounts dataflows from the OECD Data Explorer over SDMX REST.

About

The OECD Data API is the SDMX REST service behind the OECD Data Explorer, at sdmx.oecd.org/public/rest. It serves the dataflows the OECD publishes for member countries and selected non-member economies: the Economic Outlook, consumer price indices, monthly unemployment rates, quarterly national accounts, composite leading indicators, and key short-term economic indicators, among others. A dataflow is identified by an agency, an identifier, and a version, and returns SDMX-JSON, SDMX-ML, or SDMX-CSV through content negotiation or a format parameter.

Through Fibric, an operator reads the series for the economies you sell into, checks the contentconstraint query for the last update time, and proposes a change to a forecast assumption or a board note for your approval. The dataflow triplet and the update timestamp go on the record.

This is a reference listing. It documents what Fibric would read from OECD Data API and what it could propose, based on the publisher's published interfaces. Fibric builds it under a managed deployment when you request it; selecting it here installs nothing.

Inputs

  • Economic Outlook (OECD.ECO.MAD, DSD_EO@DF_EO) projections by country, with earlier issues kept as numbered dataflows
  • Consumer price indices (OECD.SDD.TPS, DSD_PRICES@DF_PRICES_ALL) and the HICP dataflows, in COICOP 1999 and COICOP 2018 versions
  • Monthly unemployment rates and levels (OECD.SDD.TPS, DSD_LFS@DF_IALFS_UNE_M) from the infra-annual labour statistics
  • Quarterly national accounts (OECD.SDD.NAD, DSD_NAMAIN1@DF_QNA) and annual GDP tables at current prices and current PPPs
  • Composite leading indicators (OECD.SDD.STES, DSD_STES@DF_CLI) and key short-term economic indicators (DSD_KEI@DF_KEI)
  • The full dataflow list at /public/rest/dataflow/all and each dataflow's structure query with references=all
  • contentconstraint queries that return a ValidFrom timestamp for the last update and an annotation with the observation count

Proposed actions

Read-only. This feed informs operators; it changes nothing.

Proposed actions are target capabilities. Every action runs propose-first and needs a validated deployment and the appropriate permissions.

What you can build

  • Reset a demand forecast when the Outlook moves

The operator reads the Economic Outlook projections for the countries you sell into. When a new issue changes GDP or consumption growth for one of them, it proposes a revised demand assumption for that market, with the dataflow version attached.

    With Demand Outlook, Forecast Variance

  • Annotate margin drift with the CPI release

Each month the operator pulls the consumer price index for your operating countries and proposes an annotation on the unit-cost series where inflation explains the move, so reviewers see the cause beside the number.

    With Unit Cost, Change Annotation

  • Put the labour market beside the hiring plan

Before a budget review the operator reads monthly unemployment rates for the regions where you hire and proposes a paragraph for the board pack, quoting the reference month and the OECD citation.

    With Labor Budget, Board Pack

Requirements

  • The agency identifier, dataflow identifier, and dataflow version for each series, copied from the Developer API button in the OECD Data Explorer
  • A filter expression of dimension values separated by dots, or all (API v1) or * (API v2), with startPeriod and endPeriod or a TIME_PERIOD component filter
  • Network reach to sdmx.oecd.org from an address that is not a VPN or anonymised source
  • Credit to the OECD in its citation format: OECD (year), dataset name, data source, DOI or URL, accessed on date
Authentication
None. The API is free of charge with no key, subject to the OECD Terms and Conditions; the OECD encourages but does not require registering your details.

Limits

  • A maximum of 60 data downloads per hour; requests over the limit are temporarily blocked, and traffic from VPNs or anonymised sources is refused
  • Most datasets are revised once or twice a year; only high-frequency economic indicators change more often, so frequent polling adds little
  • A new dataflow version may add, remove, or rename dimensions; pinning a version can leave newer data unread, and using the latest can break a parser
  • Reference metadata is served only on the API version 2 path and only as SDMX-JSON v2 or SDMX-CSV v2

Access and pricing

Questions and answers

Do I need an API key for the OECD Data API?
No. The API is free of charge and needs no key. Use is subject to the OECD Terms and Conditions, which allow you to extract, copy, adapt, distribute, and embed the data for any purpose, including commercial use, with credit to the OECD in its citation format.
How many requests can I make?
The OECD limits API access to 60 data downloads per hour. Requests above that are temporarily blocked, and the same cap applies to CSV downloads from the Data Explorer interface. Traffic from VPNs or anonymised sources is not allowed.
How do I tell whether a dataset changed since my last pull?
Query /public/rest/contentconstraint/ with the agency id and CR_A_ followed by the dataset id. The response carries a ValidFrom timestamp for the last update and an annotation with the total observation count. For incremental loads, SDMX-CSV v2 accepts an updatedAfter timestamp.
